Ethiopia is an east African country with an area of 1.1 million sq. km (472,000 sq. mi.). According to the Bureau of African Affairs, the total Population counts 77 million (2006 estimation) with 2.7% growth rate per annum. It is divided into nine federated states namely Oromiya, Amhara, Tigray, SNNPR (Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region), Somali, Afar, Harari, Gambella and Benishangul.
The population of Oromiya regional state constitutes 40% of the total. It has a total surface area of 367,000km2. It accounts for 50% of the national territory (1.1 million km2). At least 85% of the population is dwelling in rural areas and out of this the highest percentage depends on subsistence agriculture (crop production and livestock rearing).
The region usually enjoys bi-modal type of rainfall regime. The short rainy season locally referred to as 'Belg' starts in mid February and extends up to mid May. The long/main rainy season starts in June and extends up to mid September. Due to the general climatic changes, the rainfall regime that has been reliable started being erratic and unreliable affecting both long-term and short term cycle crops as well as pasture and water.
